R.G.'s Weekly Sports ReCap: Saturday 9/7 - Friday 9/13

 
Notable happenings in the sports world this past week:

Pro Tennis (U.S. Open): No. 1 Serena Williams outlasted No. 2 Victoria Azarenka to capture her fifth U.S. Open title and Grand Slam championship #17 of her illustrious career. In the men's singles final, No. 2 Rafael Nadal defeated No. 1 Novak Djokovic to win his second U.S. Open trophy and 13th career major title.

NFL (Week 1): The defending NFC champion San Francisco 49ers edged out the Green Bay Packers in a heated battle 34-28 at home. On-the-rise quarterback Colin Kaepernick threw for a career-high 412 yards and three TDs. New Niners veteran wideout Anquan Boldin caught 13 balls for 208 yards and one touchdown.....The New England Patriots are off to a 2-0 start after close victories to division rivals Buffalo Bills and the New York Jets....Detroit Lions' talented but enigmatic defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh was fined a whopping $100G for illegally low-blocking Minnesota Vikings center Jim Sullivan during 34-24 victory by the D.

Men's Soccer: Team USA clinched their seventh consecutive World Cup berth with a stunning 2-0 victory over Mexico in the qualifying round. The 2K14 World Cup championships will take place in Brazil.

MLB: Baltimore Orioles slugging first baseman Cris Davis hit his league-leading 50th home run of the season in a victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on the road. Davis is the third player in history to hit 50 homers and 40 doubles in the same season. Babe Ruth (1921) and Albert Belle (1995) were the others to accomplish the rare feat.

NBA: Future Hall-of-Famer and current Brooklyn Nets head coach Jason Kidd learned that his No. 5 jersey will be hung from the rafters by the organization he helped lead to two NBA Finals appearances as a New Jersey Nets player at the Barclays Center before their preseason matchup against the defending champion Miami Heat on October 17.

 
WNBA: Players of the Week (Monday 9/2 - Sunday 9/8)....Eastern Conference - F Angel McCoughtry, Atlanta Dream; Western Conference - G Riquna Williams, Tulsa Shock. Williams scored a league single-game record of 51 points on 17 of 28 shooting (8-14 from 3-point land) in a victory over the San Antonio Silver Stars on the road....Defending league champion Indiana Fever and the Washington Mystics locked up the final berths for the upcoming postseason.

NHL: 23-year-old All-Star center John Tavares was named the New York Islanders' 14th captain in franchise history.
